thoughts on open shelving

I hope you all had a wonderful Fourth of July! While I wasn't on vacation the entire time I was away from the blog and working my 9-5 last week. I needed to take a couple weeks off blogging while we moved, spent a few days in the house, and then drove up to Massachusetts for a bridal shower, wedding, and time with Ryan's family. I am currently in Cape Cod, admiring the lovely homes and enjoying the ocean breeze, and thinking constantly about what we need to do at the house when we get home. Our first three priorities are:

  1. Paint almost every room

  2. Decide on new light fixtures and replace all lighting

  3. Update window treatments

Once those three major cosmetic areas are complete, we can begin choosing furniture and designing rooms. While the total kitchen remodel will be something we tackle in several years, we are considering a couple minor changes. One change would be to open up the large closed cabinets with open shelving. I am hesitant about taking away valuable storage but also love the look of open shelving in some kitchens. With open shelving, it's important to maintain a minimal look and not crowd the shelves, but also show off one's most beautiful dishes and glasses. My inspiration is here...

A modern but functional open shelf design by Nicole Franzen provides a clean look with closed storage above.

A minimalist open shelf option by RIC design build with an incredible amount of storage and a hidden fridge.

Jamie Bush is a lux designer out of LA who focuses on mid-century modernism. Much of his kitchen design is super sleek with closed cabinets that barely look like cabinets but I love his integration of a few open shelves next to to the hood and range.

This kitchen by Jac Interiors is an interesting combination of traditional and mid-century. My kitchen will be far more modern but I think the use of open shelving one on side is useful inspiration.

This kitchen redux by M.O Daby Design plays up open and closed shelving and incorporates a bar counter on one side, which is something we are considering in the long term. I love the grained wood cabinets with the white/marble counters. Will definitely also use Emily Henderson's tips on "How to Style Open Shelving" once we get there...

Welcome to my midcentury musings...

I'm Madeline, a Northern Virginia resident settling into a midcentury hideaway in the suburbs. I love low-fi music, Negronis, and firing up the record player on Friday nights.
