The workspace nook

As some of you know, we are slowly working our way through some projects with the house in between our recent engagement and now planning a wedding. We also have an upcoming trip to Palm Springs to RELAX, see our venue, and meet with vendors. All that being said, the house projects are going slower than I think I originally envisioned. The good news is that my aunt (the mid-century modern designer) and my parents (jack of all trades when it comes to home improvement) will be here next week and will help us jump start some of these larger projects, i.e., painting, light installations, and making decisions on where certain art and furniture will go. Something that currently feels more manageable is this office/work space nook I have claimed on one side of our living room.

Our current state is that we have this perfectly sized nook next to our floor to ceiling windows and stair railing and the space has potential for a wonderful WFH vibe. Right now I am using a World Market desk and a Home Depot chair we bought during a period of sheer desperation when we realized COVID was going to go on a very long time and we could not continue to work from the dining room table. These need to be replaced. We have already removed the wallpaper present in this photo and will be painting the walls a warm white. This leaves me with a ton of options for how to make this look more permanent, i.e., shelving, and create a space that feels both put together and personal, without giving off too much of an "office" vibe. Commence, the inspiration!

Windows, check. Beamed ceilings, check. This setup is a great example of simplicity with functionality. I like the idea of incorporating a sconce for additional lighting.

A dark and moody work space in a tiny closet is a great use of space. I have a little more room to play with but not much.

I'm in love with these bookshelves. This is a more expansive work space but provides inspiration for shares and styling books.

I love this look with the Scandinavian style chairs, the greenery, and the stylish lighting.

Emily Henderson knows how to transform a nook. I love the shelving and easy access this provides.

This desk gives me a major hankering to do an accent wall.

I love the warm tones and the rug under the desk chair.

This feels very functional and spacious while also being perfectly coordinated. I definitely want to bring in several plants and at least one painting with warm tons. Very botanical.

I have a major obsession with rattan and have been eyeing desks like this at Joybird and Room and Board. This desk feels very doable to me and would not require installing shelves.

Send all of the ideas! Have you transformed a nook in your home? How did you do it?

Welcome to my midcentury musings...

I'm Madeline, a Northern Virginia resident settling into a midcentury hideaway in the suburbs. I love low-fi music, Negronis, and firing up the record player on Friday nights.
