the new powder room

Our powder room has been a long time in the making. This room is just off the entryway of our home and greets guests when they arrive. It's also the most utilized bathroom in the main part of the home. When we first moved into the house a year ago, the powder room was covering in a yellow-ish vinyl wallpaper and adorned with a heavy black mirror and black vanity with polished nickel finishes. I quickly went to work thinking about how to create a welcoming and fun room that we would be excited to show off to our guests, rather than orient them to our other bathroom.

BEFORE:

This is the bathroom after I swapped in a round mirror and threw a bunch of mismatched towels in. I had also peeled away much of the vinyl wallpaper, leaving a papery, streaked layer behind. We operated this way for the last year.

AFTER:

We are so so happy with how this turned out. The big decision that I went back and forth on was the wallpaper and I am so glad I landed on this Rifle Co. wallpaper from Anthropologie. It's whimsical but elegant and still fits within the MCM style. The vanity light was also from Anthropologie and the mirror was from Crate and Barrel. I made sure that all brass finishes matched.

Right now I am using a waste basket from Marshall Home Goods but plan to make one out of extra wallpaper soon.

The vanity was the big splurge from Room and Board and was totally worth it. A quality vanity is really important in a small room like this and this one fit perfectly in the space. For faucet, towel hanger and toilet paper hardware, I went with Home Depot, which were hundreds of dollars less than their Anthropologie and Pottery Barn counterparts, and these did not disappoint. I also bought a sage green Hawkins NY bath towel from Food52 to match the sage accents in the wallpaper.

Toilet paper hardware fits right in with the wallpaper.

Overall, this project cost $5,500. Products and prices below:

Room and Board Vanity: $2303 (price includes delivery)

Labor: $2100
