rock creek woods

If I had to choose a favorite MCM neighborhood, it might be Rock Creek Woods. Rock Creek Woods is in Silver Spring, Maryland and situated just between the borders of Wheaton and Kensington. The neighborhood is truly an oasis from the Washington DC hustle and comes to life in the spring when the cherry blossoms bloom and the drooping canopy turns bright green. Rock Creek is also where we discovered our first Charles Goodman home, fell in love with mid-century architecture, and began this needle in a haystack search. There is something about a Charles Goodman home that makes me wonder if I won't be able to settle for another type of mid-century (tbd...). Rock Creek Woods is comprised of 76 Charles Goodman homes and designated as a National Historic Register of Places. The designation does not place restrictions on changes that owners can make to their home but does provide a 20% tax credit for restoration work, so that is really the best of both worlds for a homeowner.

This past week, several homes came on the market in Rock Creek so I hustled over to tour and of course, spent an extra 20 minutes driving around to admire the foliage and take stock of my favorite homes.

Like most of Charles Goodman's creations, the homes are situated at an angle as a way to blend the home into the landscape. In traditional MCM fashion, owners tend to plant more sustainable trees and plants like bamboo and Japanese Maples.

The homes in Rock Creek Woods feature a unique, external paneling. This particular one has been updated with wood paneling but some homes feature the original colors - bold shades of purple, green, and orange.

One of the most appealing things about a Goodman home is its ability to bring the outside in with the floor to ceiling windows.

I also love the signature Goodman stairs, which probably aren't the best for small children or dogs, but are a signature look in his Rock Creek homes.

Who wouldn't want to enjoy their morning coffee right here?

Welcome to my midcentury musings...

I'm Madeline, a Northern Virginia resident settling into a midcentury hideaway in the suburbs. I love low-fi music, Negronis, and firing up the record player on Friday nights.
