real estate escapism

Whether a millennial owns a home, rents, is in the market for a home, or has literally no plans whatsoever to buy a home, real estate escapism has become a preferred past time for my generation. I have perfected my Redfin algorithm for three of America's hottest markets and check MLS nearly daily, even though I am not currently in the market. I tell myself I'm staying informed on home prices but I can't deny the enjoyment I get from transporting myself to a world in which I'm living in that home, using that kitchen, walking to the nearby grocery store. Since I spend so much time on Redfin, I thought I'd introduce a monthly series in which I share several of my current favorite listings - why I like them, what I don't like, what it might be like to live in this location. Locations will primarily cover my three preferred markets: DMV, Portland, Oregon and San Francisco, California but who knows, I might spread my algorithm to Los Angeles or Seattle in future posts.

I love the homes in this part of Portland and would consider living here if it were more walkable. Most of the homes were built in the 1960s and have garages, big backyards, and many of the modern conveniences that can be difficult to find with homes built in the 1950s.

Love: The modern updates - beautiful kitchen, beams, wood floors, windows, and curb appeal.

Don't love: White walls, walkability/location (this is in an area that you have to drive out of and can get snowed or iced in in the winter), garage only fits one car

Kent Mountain Retreat in Washington DC, $2.9M

This home is a bit more traditional than my typical preference but I think it's absolutely beautiful. I love the exterior color, trim, the kitchen, and the unique look and flow of the home.

Loves: This screened in porch (omg!), the ingenuity of the layout with a narrow lot, the book nook front room.

Don't Love: White walls, traditional vibes.

I'm kind of obsessed with this house all around, which recently sold for a hefty price. The color tones, wood paneling, and layout are definitely in line with my dream home!

Love: This gorgeous upper deck, kitchen design, bar area, bathrooms, big windows

Don't love: Location (not walkable!), not much of a backyard

Is this what mid-century dreams are made of? I will say that the interior design is a bit too masculine for my taste but I suppose if I could spend $7M on a house, I could afford to redesign it. This home is situated on a lust worthy piece of property in the Portland suburb of Lake Oswego. Lake access!

Love: The views! The lake! The windows! The architecture! A 1965 build.

Don't love: Is it too big? The kitchen isn't really my style but would I complain? No...

Just some real estate dreams over here, enjoy the escapism!

Welcome to my midcentury musings...

I'm Madeline, a Northern Virginia resident settling into a midcentury hideaway in the suburbs. I love low-fi music, Negronis, and firing up the record player on Friday nights.
