plants and planters for mcm design

About five years ago, it seemed that everyone was turning their apartment into a small-scale jungle. At the time, I was living in San Francisco and preparing to move to Washington DC into a one-bedroom apartment. I carefully planned what plants I would incorporate into my home to ensure I was surrounded by greenery since I would not have any green space. I killed a few plants along the way and learned that planters are really expensive. Since then, I've moved into a condo with a balcony, bought some fancy planters, taken care of plants, and let plants die. And now we're moving into a home with a large outdoor space and many rooms and I've been thinking through how to incorporate plants into the mid-century design in a tasteful way. No indoor jungles here!

I've scoured the web for indoor plant inspiration and the minimalist looks definitely shine, in my opinion. I love this simple look from Shift Modern Home for styling a mid-century dresser.

One of my favorite online plant purveyors is Bloomscape. They sell beautiful plants and planters in the softest neutrals, perfect for indoor styling.

This post would not be complete without some inspiration from Lulu and Georgia, one of my favorite natural modern designers. This tour of Mallory Fletchall's gorgeous apartment highlights the impact of a single, unique plant and the juxtaposition with statement pieces, like this velvet ottoman.

Designing for an entryway, especially a smaller, narrow one, like the entry way in our new home, requires restraint. The Spruce provides several minimalist options and I'm feeling the use of eucalyptus leaves in the entry way.

Whenever I need some swoon-worthy, refined, mid-century ideas, I visit residential photographer, Lauren Engel's blog. While this dining room features far more plants than you will see in mine, I love the simplicity of the wood and greenery.

If I could hire Los Angeles-based designer, The Modhemian I would. Her beautiful colors and use of textiles are spot on. She also knows just how to incorporate a plant into a room!

Welcome to my midcentury musings...

I'm Madeline, a Northern Virginia resident settling into a midcentury hideaway in the suburbs. I love low-fi music, Negronis, and firing up the record player on Friday nights.
