mid century modern lighting

This weekend we toured a home that featured a quintessential mid century Nelson light over the dining table, which got me thinking about lighting and its impact on a room. Lighting is an integral part of MCM design and if done right, is a seamless component that often goes unnoticed. Unattractive lighting, lack of lighting, or the wrong color of a light fixture can drastically change the aesthetic of a room. Lighting fixtures can also be very expensive and without a designer, it's difficult to determine what is worth the spend. For your viewing pleasure, some of my favorite MCM lighting and affordable options:

This dramatic light from Schoolhouse Electric is such a statement piece, I can't wait to find the right one for our dining room table.

There's always room for a little bohemian in an MCM home. This one is from JKaTouchofLove.

An original pendant lamp from Black Cat.

A minimalist bedside table sconce makes a statement, also Schoolhouse.

This office is such an ideal set up and the Schoolhouse lamp fits perfectly.

I'm a sucker for these hanging pendant lights. I'm not sure if I'd put them in my kitchen but I find them very whimsical. I also love the sconces above the open shelving. Has anyone figured out I'm obsessed with Schoolhouse lighting yet?

Cook architecture incorporates various types of lighting into one room: wall sconces, floor lamps, recessed lighting, and a structural light fixture to complement the mixed materials and floor to ceiling windows.

Lastly, the house we toured on Saturday had a gorgeous Nelson light, (similar at Herman Miller). I wonder if the current owners will let the buyers keep this piece?

Welcome to my midcentury musings...

I'm Madeline, a Northern Virginia resident settling into a midcentury hideaway in the suburbs. I love low-fi music, Negronis, and firing up the record player on Friday nights.
