mid-century modern art?

Mid-century modern art is somewhat of an enigma to me. There is the art that people were drawn to in the 1950s: . There is art that reflects the mid-century modern era: geometric shapes and colorful abstract designs. There is art that was created from 1945 - 1965 and into the 1970s: Jackson Pollack and Andy Warhol. One might argue that the furniture of the MCM period is art itself. Of course, there is no "right" mid-century modern art. Much of the art I see in MCM homes today is post--modern or simply, modern. Or even traditional. So how do we choose? I've spent some time researching art of the mid-century modern era and I think I've found the pieces I would have in my home, some from the time period, others more recent.

Classic vintage Palm Springs photography from the 1950s to 60s is quintessential MCM. One might argue these photos are overdone but I think I could find a home for one or two.

I love these oil paintings from Organic Modernism. I also love Native American art and want to find a place for this type of work in my home. The bold colors are reminiscent of traditional MCM art.

A Jackson Pollack for good measure. This is one of his most well-known pieces, Autumn Rhythm.

I wanted to include a few sculptural pieces, including this rustic piece from Lulu and Georgia.

I find this piece to be so unique, color swatches by Susan Hable.

Another sculpture/vase from Lulu and Georgia.

An abstract nude.

A classic Slim Aarons photograph from the 1960s.

A fun piece for the coffee table.

Welcome to my midcentury musings...

I'm Madeline, a Northern Virginia resident settling into a midcentury hideaway in the suburbs. I love low-fi music, Negronis, and firing up the record player on Friday nights.
