living room inspiration

Now that we OWN A HOME, the designing can begin. Ryan and I have been spending our free time combing through Pinterest, Instagram, and our favorite design sites to settle on furniture, color schemes, and longer term plans for painting, light fixtures, and big ticket purchases. It's been fun to imagine the style together but there's also so much we want to do that it can be overwhelming. I'm going to start the design process by featuring our initial plans for each room on the site here. I'm sure this will change but here's what we are thinking as of now.

This is my little mood board. We are thinking neutral, warm tones, a big rug, and some striking art. In the long run, we will buy new furniture. I've been eyeing a velvet couch and some cozy swivel chairs at Interior Define. We also want to change the fireplace color. Currently it's painted white and I'd like to either go dark or strip the paint entirely to the original brick. We will install some wood cabinetry next to the fireplace where there is a currently stained glass cabinetry and install new light fixtures throughout.

As you can see on the Redfin photo, the ceilings are gorgeous but our style is very different from the previous owners. We will not have a television in this room and we will eventually change the granite beneath the fireplace. We will also be painting almost every wall, a white or neutral and removing the fireplace mantle.

The home is extremely open and exposed to light, which we love and was a major factor in buying this home. But there is some space when one walks from the kitchen to living room where we would like to add a rattan buffet with our record player. I'm also interested in adding a round game table with some fun chairs to the right. I have my eye on lots of light fixtures, plants, and ceramic pieces too but I won't let myself buy anything until we are actually in the space.

Welcome to my midcentury musings...

I'm Madeline, a Northern Virginia resident settling into a midcentury hideaway in the suburbs. I love low-fi music, Negronis, and firing up the record player on Friday nights.
