Furnishing a home

Of course once one purchases a midcentury home, it needs to be furnished. I have to keep that in mind as we consider home prices. We could buy a beautiful home but spend so much buying it, we wouldn't have much money left over for making it ours. Although I have no idea where we will land right now, I am still perusing my favorite designers and pieces for future purchases. And while I am looking for an authentic midcentury modern home, my interior style is a bit more "California Casual," if you will. I should also mention my aunt is an amazing interior designer so she will of course be helping us map this all out. I know what I like but am definitely not a designer.

Lulu and Georgia

Lulu and Georgia has become an obsession of sorts. The dreamy website features neutral tones and light filled contemporary meets traditional meets desert chic rooms, if that's an actual style. I think their pieces can be incorporated into midcentury homes without feeling like we've veered too far from the aesthetic.

Who doesn't love a breakfast nook? This isn't typical in a midcentury home but I definitely want to incorporate these gorgeous pillows somewhere.

It seems a bit indulgent to even entertain fancy outdoor furniture as that will be the last thing on the list when we move in but it's fun to think about sitting on the patio with our coffee in the morning.

I love velvet in small doses and these two couches facing one another really complement the floor to ceiling windows.

I have had the buffet in the background on my wish list forever... probably 2+ years. It never drops in price but maybe one day? I envision this housing the record player, some dried flowers, a lamp and a cool piece of art, similar to this photo.

I absolutely love the desert boho vibe of this bathroom, the fun lighting, and the orange rugs.

Sometimes midcentury decor can feel a bit sparse and lacking in comfort. I want a cozy sectional and warm carpets to the vaulted ceilings and bring the room together.

CB2

CB2 is a bit more art deco than my taste but they have some great pieces at more affordable prices that can be mixed into living room and dining room decor.

I love these boucle chairs but find that they can be really expensive at some retailers. This one is more affordable.

I've always wanted a white bistro table in a breakfast nook.

Design Within Reach

Design Within Reach is generally outside of our price range for outfitting an entire room but it's a great site to visit for ideas or purchase one or two pieces. Some of their designs are too minimal for my taste but they have some iconic pieces I can't help but include here.

These modern but comfy bar stools are pretty dreamy, I can see them fitting in perfectly at a breakfast bar.

I love the unique structure of this table, which can be opened in the middle to expose an extender that lengthens the table.

Welcome to my midcentury musings...

I'm Madeline, a Northern Virginia resident settling into a midcentury hideaway in the suburbs. I love low-fi music, Negronis, and firing up the record player on Friday nights.
