current wishlist and recent finds

We have finally reached the point in our home-buying and designing journey where we are saving money for future renovation! The first few months we used our monthly income for all of the new things one needs for home ownership, as well as some minor renovation work: adding a wall in the family room, refacing the fireplace and walls in our bedroom, and installing carpet in several rooms. Now that we're past those "immediate" to-do's, we have been able to focus more on the fun part - buying furniture! The rooms in need of several new pieces are the dining room, family room, primary bedroom and office. Below are some future wishlist items and recent purchases, some of which change daily based on the backorder status of items.

Rugs

We are in serious need of a dining room rug. Currently the space features a long, modern wood table and West Elm walnut dining chairs. I would like to find a deep or beige gray color to tie the space together, like this lovely Lulu and Georgia rug that just became available again.

We also finally bought our long awaited dining chairs from West Elm, a later mid-century period style chair, and could not be happier with the purchase.

Other rug option - this West Elm rug is less expensive and achieves a similar effect.

Ottoman or Coffee Table

Our family room is by far the most used room in our house, especially during this long stretch of the omicron variant. We were using a small Ikea table for drinks and other items as a temporary solution but knew the room needed a large coffee table or ottoman. After several months of searching, our neighbor posted about an Eames replica table for $50 and I ran over to his house to secure it. So this is no longer on the wishlist...

Bistro Table and Chairs

Another necessary addition in the family room is this little nook by the window just off the kitchen. I love to sit there in the morning and read the news while drinking my freshly made latte. It is often my favorite part of the day. I want to find an oval table, maybe something with a marble top, like this Room and Board custom table and some boucle chairs. We are still deciding because we want to do some exploring and maybe visit some local MCM stores to find some different pieces for this space.

Room and Board Julian Tables are customizable, I am entertaining a few options with a white base but need to play around with some samples in the room.

We also need a couple chairs and I would like at least one boucle piece in the house. I love the Lulu and Georgia Sydney Dining Chair.

I also bought these but they are backordered until July so I may change my mind before then - Crate and Barrel Boucle Dining Chair.

Credenza

This one is tough because it's a big investment and I haven't seen anything that really catches my eye. The credenza needs to be long enough to take up space in the large nook at the end of the dining room and right now we have one in there that is far too short. Once we have the dining room looking more finished with the rug, I will feel more ready to make a decision. These are a few of the credenzas I have entertained over the years.

I like the solid look and extra storage space of the Kenwood from Room and Board. This gives us customization options for wood and hardware.

This Crate and Barrel Keenan sideboard is more than I'd like to spend but the detailing is unique and goes with our dining room vibe.

I've been obsessed with this cane sideboard for about four years and wish I had bought it when we were back in our apartment and it was as low as $1,000. Now with cane having a moment, it's up to $1,999 but on sale for $1,400 at Joybird right now.

This is probably a bit small and doesn't have room for our record player and speakers but I find this to be a very cool piece (from Joybird) for a bedroom or study.

Accent Chairs and Loveseats

We finally purchased a new television for the family room, which will be mounted with a built in floating shelf underneath for the cable boxes. We will move the current television to the office with a cozy loveseat or "1 1/2 chair" so that if we need to split up to watch our preferred television show, we can. One loveseat I'm eyeing from Interior Define is the highly customizable Sloan.

Inspiration as of late...

I find myself spending hours on some of my favorite designer's sites and recently discovered Yond Interiors. Their use of neutrals, earthy tones, and textures are giving me some serious inspiration on mixing mid-century modern with more contemporary colors and natural textures, especially in the bathroom.

And of course we would love to remodel the kitchen at some point. Right now I'm all about this backsplash and sleek cabinetry.

Welcome to my midcentury musings...

I'm Madeline, a Northern Virginia resident settling into a midcentury hideaway in the suburbs. I love low-fi music, Negronis, and firing up the record player on Friday nights.
