Catching up

I very much thought when we bought our mid-century modern in Holmes Run Acres that I would have oodles of content for the blog - and I do! But the pace of life with renovation and social gatherings and travel on the rise has made my priority list shift somewhat. I still plan on keeping the blog updated and am going to try for once a week, especially now that the colder months are on the way and we will be zipping ourselves up at home. However, Ryan and I head to our favorite mid-century haven, Palm Springs this Friday for wedding planning so we will be on the road but I expect to share some of my favorite architecture during our stay. So the big question - how is the house going? We have made many changes on the inside and since my aunt, the designer, visited, we have revamped some of our original plans. I expect to share more on our in-process living, dining, and family room soon but for now...

Before... we were working on peeling off vinyl wallpaper in one of the biggest rooms in the house.

After...we finally brought in the professionals to finish the job and paint the wall in the main color we are using throughout the upstairs, Benjamin Moore Hillsboro Beige (1033). We also installed a West Elm sculptural glass ribbed sconce.

We are repurposing the original dining room just off the kitchen into the family room, which makes more sense for our lifestyle and flow. We will be building a wall here so that the couch is no longer blocking one of the entrances.

New carpet! I am most excited to replace the carpet in the family room and bedroom/office downstairs. We want this to look like a sisal rug and will likely be going with one of these options from Alexandria Carpet One.

The fireplace! I was so excited for this to be painted and it exceeded my expectations. We have added some birch wood and just need to do final touch-ups. Eventually we will replace the granite with a solid dark stone.

A close-up of our new painted walls, which work well with our linen light shades and buffet in the dining room.

The bar set up for now.

A view of the living room from the new dining room. We are still deciding where to hang things and completing the trim around the windows. Lighting and ceiling fan will also be replaced.

Our pumpkins are out for Halloween.

And the mid-century address numbers have been installed, thanks Dad!

And just so you know what we're up to... lots of weddings including Ryan's brothers in downtown DC this past weekend!

Welcome to my midcentury musings...

I'm Madeline, a Northern Virginia resident settling into a midcentury hideaway in the suburbs. I love low-fi music, Negronis, and firing up the record player on Friday nights.
