a portland river house

One of my favorite substack writers, Leslie Stephens, who lives near where I grew up in Portland, shared this AD article on a gorgeous 70s-style home on Sauvie's Island, which is north of the city. There are so many things I love about this house, color palette, and details. Sharing some of my favorite parts of this home and design decisions below, there so much inspo!

So of course these ceilings are a dream but the fireplace is an absolute wow factor. The choice of tile and neutral tones are the dreamiest. Also, even though there is basically an all wood vibe going on floor, wall paneling, and ceiling, it doesn't feel like too much, I think because it's such an appealing wood stain made from local firs!

I'm really impressed with how they use muted color in this home. I often find myself terrified by color and yet they are painting their walls and selecting warm colors that amp up the vibe and feel homey.

The light is glorious in this home and the green trim used with the doors works so well, I can't get over it. When remodeling the home, the owners moved the entire kitchen from this space and opened up this area to improve flow and create an entryway.

The kitchen feels somehow 70s-mod - colors and shapes, west coast relaxation - massive window overlooking the river, and even a bit traditional - hardware choices.

I'm always bereft for where the heck to put plants in my home but this gives me some ideas for a bathroom plant option.

Welcome to my midcentury musings...

I'm Madeline, a Northern Virginia resident settling into a midcentury hideaway in the suburbs. I love low-fi music, Negronis, and firing up the record player on Friday nights.
