4th of july reading

The Fourth of July holiday is upon us and I'm heading to a ranch in Colorado with Ryan and my family for eight days before we make the big move to the new house on July 12th. It's going to be kind of a whirlwind when we get back to the DMV. While in Colorado, I'll be taking the week off from blogging and am sharing my favorite mid-century design and architecture reads before then, along with a few other tidbits from the internet. Stay cool and safe this weekend! Content will return on July 13th, with more updates from our new home.

I've been dying over this gorgeous rose gold bathroom in Bonobos founder, Andy Dunn and wife, Manuela Zoninsein's New York City apartment. I'd love to incorporate this kind of shower/soaking tub hybrid into our upstairs full bath. The tour of the modernist Brazilian-inspired home is featured on Architectural Digest.

  1. Light fixtures are EVERYTHING. I find myself constantly perusing sconces and pendants and trying to decide what to install to transform our house. It's a work in progress...

  2. The various gardens from Cup of Joe readers. Ryan and I are preparing to be people that have to maintain a yard. It's an elusive idea for us as we have never had a yard in our ten years as adults in the real world and we have managed to kill all of our house plants. I have been reading up on landscaping and maintenance. Even though this isn't about maintenance, I loved seeing the different takes on a garden.

  3. Japanese Influenced Mid-Century. Our new home has some Japanese influences that I'm trying to work with, read: frosted glass sliding doors. I initially disliked them until my mom mentioned it had a Japanese feel. This home tour on Midcentury Home gave me some good ideas.

  4. Eames Style Chair Sale. This Eames style chair is $990 over the holiday weekend, normally $1700...

  5. Vintner's Daughter Active Botanical Serum. I finally caved and bought it. The hype...is real? I have been using oils on my face for years but have never felt quite this glowey and confident.

  6. Amber Glass Mugs. I've wanted these since we saw them at the gift shop at Los Poblanos but I also have really no need for them. Thoughts?

  7. How to Make Your Life Awesome. Sometimes we need a reminder that we are doing great things, that our setbacks do not define us, but improve us, and that focusing on getting ahead and making money doesn't make us happy in the long term. Highly recommend doing this exercise on a regular basis.

Welcome to my midcentury musings...

I'm Madeline, a Northern Virginia resident settling into a midcentury hideaway in the suburbs. I love low-fi music, Negronis, and firing up the record player on Friday nights.
